Mentors Who’ve Inspired Me
Mentor #1: Wayne Dyer
I recently wrote an article about mentors and how they’re everywhere if you know where to look. One of the key points I made was that books are incredible tools and great stand-ins for real-life mentors. In fact, one of my most influential mentors is someone I’ve never met, but whose writing has had a profound impact on me: Dr. Wayne Dyer. Best known for his work in the fields of self-help, spirituality, and motivation, Dr. Dyer is often credited for taking Eastern teachings and making them more accessible to the Western world.
Your Erroneous Zones
The book that launched Dyer’s career is called Your Erroneous Zones, which posits that correcting patterns and reducing negative thinking can change your life. Dr. Dyer is also well-known for saying “simply have a mind that is open to everything but attached to nothing,” which is my guiding principle as a leader. While his influence is far-reaching, I know him best from his audiobook, Meditations for Manifesting. I’ve been doing his meditations for over fifteen years now, and although his work isn’t the sole contributor to my success, it has certainly put me in the right mindset for accomplishing what I have in life.
Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life
Another book of Dr. Dyer’s I’ve found to be transformational is Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life. It speaks to applying the lessons of the Tao Te Ching, which I refer to often in my coaching. Ultimately, this book is all about how your thinking affects your life and your mindfulness. It teaches you to start the day by asking for what you want and to end the day with thankfulness for what you’ve achieved. While it may not change the obstacles you face during the day, it absolutely opens the mind to opportunity. Identifying opportunities has not only changed the trajectory of my life but it’s also helped me become a more positive person and leader.
